A market leading Engineering Consultancy have an excellent opportunity for a Principal Electric Machines Engineer who is experienced in automotive, aerospace, or other related industry, to join their growing team.

In this role you will gain exposure to multiple engineering disciplines, so it is important for engineers to be increasingly multi-disciplinary, covering aspects of electrical, electronic, electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical systems. Working in their fast-moving consultancy environment, the role will demand some flexibility and the ability to quickly grasp engineering concepts. 

You will have a demonstrable track record in, or the ambition and capability to build, technical leadership in the design of electric machines for various platforms, including automotive and aerospace. They are looking for you to have the ability to take an engineering problem, plan a process for addressing the problem and then execute the solution, working with others in the wider team with specific skills where necessary. 

You will have a good understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of motor topologies and technologies (IPM, SPM, Syndrome, SRM, BLDC, IM etc.) and understanding of typical manufacturing methods and a view of future technologies that will drive cost reduction and/or performance enhancements in designs in the future. 

You will have the opportunity to work for their clients that include many of the best-known global engineering corporations. They are actively providing design and consultancy services related to drivetrains in the automotive, aerospace, renewable energy, rail, marine and process industry.

Responsibilities in this role will include: 

-  Directly supporting the Head of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, and Head of Engineering, in business strategic direction and commercial opportunities. 

- Providing technical leadership, design, and analysis guidance to a small group of electrical machine design and development engineers, from Graduate to Senior Engineering level.

- Delivering engineering work and taking technical leadership of aspects of our e-Powertrain projects including activities such as Electric machine concept design – i.e., trade-off Studies including motor type, magnet topology, pole/slot combinations, cooling options etc.

- Electric machine optimisation and detailed tasks utilizing latest CAE software from within the group and leading 3rd party tools, including 2D and 3D electromagnetic analysis, and thermal analysis

- Design optimisation and problem resolution for our customers products and projects (e.g. durability, vibration, efficiency, failures)

- Working with suppliers to specify and oversee the manufacturing (prototype and production) and testing of prototype machines.

- Providing input on future capability and technology development in the area of electric machines for the immediate team and wider group

- Writing proposals for project work or R&D funding

- Delivering marketing material, e.g. webinars, white papers, blog posts

You will have: 

- High level qualifications (typically degree, ideally PhD) in electrical engineering or related subject

- 5+ years industrial experience in a related area e.g. Automotive industry

- Be highly adaptable and willingness to take on challenging and novel problems, as well as continuously learning and improving

- Advanced knowledge of electromagnetic behaviour of electrical machines and ability to use electrical machine design, modelling and analysis tools 

- Good understanding of thermal analysis of electrical machines

- Understanding of motor control methodologies and application of power electronics/motor control solutions
